Our strategy to become more digitally focused has already seen the acquisition of two digital asset management companies to build on our existing digital capabilities from the Arcadis technology division, all of which will form the foundations of this new digital entity.
The Opportunity – Supporting the delivery of a range of new software products
The Business Analyst is responsible for their own work, within the solutions delivery team, at task level and takes ultimate responsibility for identifying and solving problems affecting the business solution, and works closely with the project manager to analyse the existing business systems and make recommendations for improvement. An analytical thinker that can simplify thought processes for others - requires flexibility, responsiveness, creativity, innovative thinking, acceptance of change, and a dependence on individuals and interactions.
The Business Analyst is an important part of the project team. Acting as the key interface between the users and the project manager they gather information, document processes, and confirm the final documents with users. They must have a combination of both soft skills and practical skills. Often working between the IT department and a particular business area it is essential to have good negotiating skills, is a great listener and is skilled at dealing with conflict.

The Business Analyst will help to manage, change and plan for the future in line with Gen’s goals. This could be for one specific project, or as a permanent feature of the organisation. The main task is to identify customer business problems and find the most effective solution, working with the requirements at all stages of software development life cycle and constantly mediates between the customer and a team of programmers.
Core responsibilities include:
GEN Professional skills: Contributing to all aspects of implementation projects as part of a team under supervision, upholding GEN culture in the wider company. This role will operate within the requirements set out by project stakeholders and it will interact in a professional way.
Business Analysis: Contributing to business analysis and process design activities as part of a team. This will also include attending on-site observations and may participate in the interview and consultation of project stakeholders. Analyse Requirements – Organizing, specifying and modelling the requirements to ensure they are complete and unambiguous.
Elicitation: Uncover the underlying business issues that need to be addressed and discover any information related to the project
Validating and Verifying Requirements: Making sure that the requirements map to the business need being addressed, they are approved by all the appropriate stakeholders and that they meet with relevant quality standards
Products & Solutions: Become familiar with Arcadis Gen’s Industry Solutions and design process through proactive contribution to live projects and programs. Participating in solution design activities as part of a team and attending design reviews as part of a peer-review cohort. The role will also support solution reviews as part of an Agile delivery process.
Competent Verbal Communication: Out of all the skills communication holds the biggest ground. One should be capable of making the agenda known with extreme clarity. Also, being able to ask insightful questions is required so that the right kind of information is achieved from stakeholders.
Documentation: Reviewing documentation and providing quality feedback to author.
Adhering to standards, templates and version control.
Specifying Requirements: Ensuring that the documentation of the requirements is in a layout and format that can be easily shared with and understood by stakeholders

Process Development: Researching possible software solutions to increase work efficiency / involved in analysing the structure of the business; its processes and determining areas in which technology or alternative solutions can add value.
Using Blueworks, the business process modeler, to help Gen discover and document our business processes, business decisions and policies in a collaborative manner.
Test development / testing (delivery): Writing and reviewing regression and User Acceptance Test (UAT) scripts, perform Unit and Regression testing and understanding of how to use testing in an agile environment with the ability to use Gherkin (Domain Specific Language) for writing acceptance criteria.
Data Manipulation: Developing competence by using Excel and Arcadis Gen’s tools, Braid Data Loader - training will be given in Confluence, Jira & Blueworks to prepare, cleanse & load client data in our systems. This role will also create test data sets and write and execute basic SQL (training will be provided if required)
Other tools to be fluent in? for example, MS visio, MS Visual Studio, Enterprise Architect and StereoLogic
Reporting Solution (Deployment): Becoming familiar with Arcadis Gen Reporting Strategy & report catalogues, contribute to report design under guidance and perform Report Testing.
Training & Support Skills (delivery support): Become familiar with Arcadis Gen training methodology and support senior Implementation lead during delivery of User Acceptance Testing, Training, Go-Live and Post Go-Live support. This role will also prepare training systems, configuring mobile devices.
Key Relationships, Collaborations and Connections
This role reports to the appropriate line manager and will be a key member of the project, solution and delivery team, collaborating with all domains within the Gen biosphere.
What We Are Looking For
Someone who has an analytical approach to understanding, describing / modelling and solving real world problems, the ability to follow and where necessary adapt a defined process / methodology with suitable guidance from more experienced Arcadis Gen colleagues and excellent written and oral presentation skills, including conveying technical information.
Due to the technical nature of a Business Analyst role you will also be expected to have good knowledge or experience of the following technical areas.
- Data Modelling
- Project Management
- Business Intelligence
- Industry / business experience gained either through vacation or undergraduate placements.
- An understanding of programming or technology relevant to the industry sectors in which we operate which will help you work with and understand the output of the Arcadis Gen Technology team
- Data Manipulation Skills using Excel or similar.
- EAM system experience: IBM Maximo or other EAM systems such as Infor, SAP, Oracle etc.
- Experience of GIS or CAD systems.
- Experience with ERP systems such as Oracle and SAP.
- Any experience relating to change management or organisational change.
- System test experience: Test case design unit / UAT / regression testing, automated testing cutover between legacy and new systems.
