Authenticity in the Age of AI: What Really Gets You the Job Offer?

Rastko Gojković

November 30, 2022.
A date that, for many, holds no particular significance—just another ordinary day.
Yet, it quietly marked a turning point for the entire world. On that day, the most widely adopted AI tool—ChatGPT—was launched, changing how people work, think, and live.

You might be wondering: Was this very text written by one of those AI tools?
Sometimes, it’s genuinely hard to tell.
Just as it’s hard to know whether the CV you’re reading was written by the candidate—or by an algorithm.
Whether a cover letter reflects genuine interest—or is just a polished template.
Whether a LinkedIn post is authentic—or a product of artificial intelligence.

And that brings us to the core of this discussion.
The topic isn’t AI itself, but rather the risks of its misuse—especially when it works against candidates rather than for them.
The question we’re increasingly asking is:
Where is the line between a helpful tool and the loss of authenticity?

How TA and Hiring Teams Spot AI-Generated Content

While AI can produce content that looks impressive at first glance, experienced recruiters and hiring managers can usually tell when something feels “off.”
Here are some of the most common red flags:

  • Overuse of buzzwords and overly polished language that doesn’t match the tone or level of the role.
  • Exaggerated accomplishments—candidates who appear as superheroes on paper but struggle to explain their actual contributions during interviews.
  • Listing tools, technologies, or methodologies they’ve never actually used - often added just to pass pre-screening, based on AI suggestions.
  • Generic interview answers that sound like they were copied from an AI prompt—lacking personal insight or real-life examples, and inconsistent with the CV.
  • Red flag: Using AI tools during live coding tasks or assessments.
Sometimes, it’s far better to admit you don’t know something and show curiosity to learn - rather than letting a tool answer for you.

Why Authenticity Still Matters

A candidate who can clearly and honestly tell their story, who stands behind what they’ve written, and who can connect their experience to the real needs of the role—always leaves a stronger impression.

AI is a great choice when you need help structuring content, getting quick answers, or exploring different perspectives.
It can also be a fantastic sparring partner when preparing for interviews — helping you practice responses, simulate scenarios, or organize your thoughts.

But despite all its advantages, the human brain remains the most powerful tool we have.
That’s why AI should never replace your voice when it comes to telling your story.
Your experience, your achievements, your way of thinking — that’s what truly sets you apart in the hiring process.
